Gummy bears were the first 'gummy' candy, made in Germany in 1922. But - the foundations of gummy bears go back much further than that. Gummy bears, and all gummy-based sweets, probably began as a Turkish delight - first sold as a medicine in Arabian pharmacies around 900 AD. In the 1700s, a Turkish sultan fell in love with the sweets and spread them around the world, where they gained widespread popularity. Why is Turkish candy a medicine? One important reason: it contained sugar, which then, as now, was thought to relieve sore throats. The original Turkish sweets did not contain gelatine, unlike today's fudge. People liked Turkish sweets for the same reasons they liked fudge - the smooth texture and the sweet, fruity flavour.

Early versions of fudge began with options like dripping gum, which originated in the early 19th century and was inexpensive and popular. In the 1860s, someone in Boston put the icing on a delight and it was probably sent to Union soldiers. This became known as "jelly beans". Later, in the 1970s, a candy salesman, David Klein, invented another type of jelly bean, which he called a "jelly belly".

The German candy maker Hans Riegel, who was the first known person to use a fudge mix, liked the dancing bears that were popular at festivals and other events in the 19th and early 20th centuries. As a result, he decided to create a candy version. Hence the shape of the bear. The original company founded by Reigel was known as "Haribo".

Okay - so, "fudge". The word is based on the texture of the candy, which Riegel thinks resembles rubber. The German word for "rubber" is translated as - yes!" fondant". - "Fudge".

Haribo survived the war, although the company said they suffered difficulties, such as labour problems, with workers reduced from 100 to 30. Over the years, many questions arose about these workers and there was speculation that they were being forced into labour. The company denied the accusation. Records show that the company supplied gummy bears to the German army and that two of Riegel's sons fought for the Third Reich and were taken prisoner by the Allies.

The choice of shapes and sizes also varies enormously, creating a remarkable range of options.  The best thing to do is - try them all. We have shark gummy, egg gummy, army gummy, frog gummy ...... And then there's the Swedish-made vegan variety - Swedish Fish. You never know what lies ahead!
